Budget Debates Ignite in Rajya Sabha as BJD’s Sulata Deo Slams India's Continued Financial Aid to Bangladesh

BJD MP Sulata Deo delivered a fiery speech in the Rajya Sabha during the 2026-27 Union Budget discussion, questioning the ₹60 crore aid to Bangladesh amid rising attacks on Hindu sites. Deo also slammed the central government for neglecting Odisha’s infrastructure and criticized the state’s soaring debt, sparking a national debate on foreign policy and regional equity

The floor of the Rajya Sabha transformed into a theater of sharp geopolitical and regional critique on February 10, 2026, as Biju Janata Dal (BJD) MP Sulata Deo delivered a blistering rebuttal to the Union Budget 2026-27. In a session marked by heightened tensions, Deo directly challenged the Ministry of External Affairs’ decision to allocate ₹60 crore in aid to Bangladesh. While this figure represents a significant reduction from the previous fiscal year—largely due to the diplomatic frost following the 2024 ouster of Sheikh Hasina—Deo argued that any continued financial support remains untenable. She underscored the gravity of the situation by citing over 200 documented attacks on Hindu religious sites and minority communities in Bangladesh, questioning why Indian taxpayer money is being directed toward a neighbor whose domestic stability and commitment to minority rights have faced such severe scrutiny.

The discourse, however, extended far beyond international borders, as Deo pivoted to a stern defense of Odisha’s regional interests. She accused the central government of systemic neglect, pointing to a glaring lack of provisions for vital infrastructure projects, specifically new railway lines and highway expansions across the state. The critique took a localized turn as she slammed the current BJP-led state government in Odisha, alleging that they have burdened the state with a staggering ₹91,000 crore in borrowings with little to show in the way of tangible development. Her speech struck a chord with those concerned about the protection of minorities and the equitable distribution of national resources, even as government proponents defended the aid as a necessary strategic maneuver to prevent Bangladesh from drifting further into the spheres of influence of Pakistan and China.

As the budget discussions conclude, Deo’s remarks highlight a growing friction between India’s strategic foreign policy goals and the urgent developmental demands of its constituent states. The debate serves as a stark reminder that in the current political climate, foreign aid is no longer viewed merely as a diplomatic tool, but as a domestic issue that must be weighed against internal security and regional prosperity. The fallout from this session is likely to reverberate in the coming weeks, as the government faces increasing pressure to balance its "Neighborhood First" policy with the rising expectations of states like Odisha that feel sidelined in the national narrative.
